The annual debate about Australia Day is a valuable opportunity

Andrea Mason is chief executive officer of the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Women's Council and NT Australian of the Year. She reflects on January 26 and what it means to her as a proud Ngaanyatjarra/Karonie woman, as a businesswoman in the social enterprise sector, as an Australian, and as a leader advancing reconciliation.

She sees the annual debate around Australia Day's date as necessary – and one of the "rare times in the year where Indigenous issues are squarely on the national agenda, and where we are able to initiate those bigger, more challenging conversations that we must have as a nation if we're to move forward together in reconciliation".
