Do you support recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by changing the Constitution or making some other kind of legal change?
Yes
What should the change look like?
there should be changes to the racial discrimination act to make it stronger and have more legal standing to actually be upheld in a court of law. there should be changes legally to the acts (e.g. the equal opportunity and human rights act) to ensure thos
Should we have a statement that acknowledges the First Peoples of Australia?
Yes. This should be in the Constitution.
Where is the best place to put it?
sorry i do not know i am not a lawyer or have any legal background i am just writing from my experiences
What should the statement say?
i don't know how to word it all sorry
Do you have any other comments on a statement about the First Peoples of Australia?
FULL LOVE AND RESPECT! :) i wanna emphasise on the consultation with Nations and communities and different countries, cos the Elders and Traditional Owners really need to lead the way with having a leading voice in this stuff as communities and everyone
Should the word 'race' be taken out of the Constitution?
I don't know
Should the Australian Parliament keep the power to make special laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples?
No
Do you have any other comments on powers to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples?
i also think the parliament should not be given special powers to make laws or any legislation that applies to any Aboriginal and/or TSI peoples as so often this is discriminatory
Do you think that a guarantee against racial discrimination should go into the Constitution?
Yes
Do you have any ideas about what words to use for that guarantee, or where in the Constitution to put it?
sorry i don't know
Should the guarantee protect all Australians against racial discrimination, or only Indigenous Australians?
All Australians
If there is not enough support for a guarantee in the Constitution, what other things can we do to stop racial discrimination in national laws?
i outlined this stuff in the section 'what should the change look like'
Do you have any other comments on changing the Constitution to stop racial discrimination?
in regards to other changes to legislation to stop racial discrimination there needs to be more solid stuff about understanding culture and racism in the child youth and families act, and in the aboriginal child placement principle that works in practice
Do you think Indigenous people should have a say when Parliament and government make laws and policies about Indigenous affairs?
Yes
Should a new Indigenous group be set up under the Constitution to give advice and make sure Indigenous people have a voice in political decisions that affect them?
Yes
Is it worth creating the new group if it can only give advice and does not have the power to block new laws?
Yes
Do you have any ideas about what the new group would look like?
having presence from Elders and Traditional Owners is essential and recognised and respected community leaders. also making it clear at every meeting and in a statement of about us by the group that they do not intend to speak on behalf of other countries
Do you have any other comments on this Indigenous group?
i said 'to not speak on behalf of other people's countries' as many Elders and communities i know are very territorial and that is one of the biggest issues i have heard from street word and the Koorie grape vine is that people don't want to be involved w
Should we delete section 25?
Yes
What would we achieve by getting rid of section 25?
this needs to be replaced and expanded with something that addresses that in rural and remote areas the majority of Aboriginal peopole do not even rock up to the election, and that has something that attempts to support Aboriginal people to become PM's
Is there any point in keeping it?
no it is blatantly racially discriminatory
Do you have any other comments?
i know many people in community who are concerned about the impact if this doesn't go through, as it will make race relations worse. personally i don't think non-Indigenous peoples should be allowed to vote on a constitution it should be only Indigenous p
